Nanowires grown on graphene have surprising structure

(Phys.org) —When a team of University of Illinois engineers set out to grow nanowires of a compound semiconductor on top of a sheet of graphene, they did not expect to discover a new paradigm of epitaxy.   Original post on phys.org    Comments on reddit.com

Computer model successfully predicts drug side effects

A new set of computer models has successfully predicted negative side effects in hundreds of current drugs, based on the similarity between their chemical structures and those molecules known to cause side effects, according to a new article.   Original post on sciencedaily.com    Comments on reddit.com

New nanostructure for batteries keeps going and going

(Phys.org) — For more than a decade, scientists have tried to improve lithium-based batteries by replacing the graphite in one terminal with silicon, which can store 10 times more charge. But after just a few charge/discharge cycles, the silicon structure would crack and crumble, rendering the battery…   Original post on phys.org    Comments on reddit.com

Scientists produce eye structures from human blood-derived stem cells – R&D Mag

For the first time, scientists at the University of Wisconsin-Madison have made early retina structures containing proliferating neuroretinal progenitor cells using induced pluripotent stem cells derived from human blood. The retina structures showed the capacity to form layers of cells which possess the machinery that could allow them to communicate information.   Original post on rdmag.com    Comments on digg.com

Nanotrees harvest the sun’s energy to turn water into hydrogen fuel

Electrical engineers are building a forest of tiny nanowire trees in order to cleanly capture solar energy without using fossil fuels and harvest it for hydrogen fuel generation. The team said nanowires, which are made from abundant natural materials like silicon and zinc oxide, also offer a cheap way to deliver hydrogen fuel on a mass scale.   Original post on sciencedaily.com    Comments on reddit.com
