Escherichia coli bacteria produce diesel on demand

It sounds like science fiction but a team from the University of Exeter, with support from Shell, has developed a method to make bacteria produce diesel on demand. While the technology still faces many significant commercialisation challenges, the diesel, produced by special strains of E. coli bacteria,…   Original post on phys.org    Comments on reddit.com

Study finds fungi, not plant matter, responsible for most carbon sequestration in northern forests

(Phys.org) —A new study undertaken by a diverse group of scientists in Sweden has found that contrary to popular belief, most of the carbon that is sequestered in northern boreal forests comes about due to fungi that live on and in tree roots, rather than via dead needles, moss and leaf matter. China Wants Nuclear Reactors, and Lots of Them

Soon after the Fukushima Dai-Ichi nuclear meltdown in March 2011, Germany announced it would decommission all its nuclear plants. Switzerland and Italy rejected proposals to build more reactors. Biofuel created by explosive technology

Chemical engineers at UC Berkeley have created a new, cleaner fuel out of an old concoction that was once used to make explosives. The fuel, which uses a century-old fermentation process to transform plant material into a propellant, could eventually replace gasoline and drastically cut down on greenhouse gas emissions, according to the team of Berkeley scientists. The discovery, published in the journal Nature, means corn, sugar cane, grasses and other fast-growing plants or trees, like eucalyptus, could be used to make the propellant, replacing oil. The research into creating a diesel substitute is part of a 10-year development program by the Energy Biosciences Institute, a collaboration among UC Berkeley, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The expectation in California is that it will be used initially for niche markets, like the military, and eventually in trucks, trains and other vehicles that need more oomph than hybrid or battery power can provide.   Original post on sfgate.com    Comments on reddit.com

India is Building a Thorium-Fueled Nuclear Plant

Motherboard has given the thorium dream and its fervent band of disciples a long hard look. The jury is still out on whether this alternative brand of nuclear power is feasible, though thorium is more abundant, and less radioactive than uranium, and advocates argue that it’s much safer than conventional nuke plants. Hope so; it looks like the world’s about to get a real-live thorium test run in India.   Original post on vice.com    Comments on reddit.com

Politifact: When Mitt Romney was governor of Massachusetts, he “stood in front of a coal plant and pointed at it and said, ‘This plant kills.’” True.

Energy policy and gas prices garnered a lot of attention in the town-hall style debate between President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney. Romney accused Obama of stifling domestic production and said he would champion the oil and coal industries. Obama fired back that Romney hasn’t always been such a proponent of coal. “Governor, when you were governor of Massachusetts, you stood in front of a coal plant and pointed at it and said, ‘This plant kills,’ and took great pride in shutting it down. And now suddenly you’re a big champion of coal,” Obama said. PolitiFact Ohio has…   Original post on politifact.com    Comments on reddit.com
