Endangered primates and cats may be hiding out in swamps and mangrove forests

What happens to animals when their forest is cut down? If they can, they migrate to different forests. But in an age when forests are falling far and fast, many species may have to shift to entirely different environments. A new paper in Folia Primatologica theorizes that some 60 primate species and 20 wild cat species in Asia and Africa may be relying more on less-impacted environments such as swamp forests, mangroves, and peat forests.   Original post on mongabay.com    Comments on reddit.com

Study finds fungi, not plant matter, responsible for most carbon sequestration in northern forests

(Phys.org) —A new study undertaken by a diverse group of scientists in Sweden has found that contrary to popular belief, most of the carbon that is sequestered in northern boreal forests comes about due to fungi that live on and in tree roots, rather than via dead needles, moss and leaf matter. Parks, indigenous territories are effectively reducing Amazon deforestation

Strict conservation areas and indigenous reserves are more effective at reducing deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon relative to ‘sustainble-use’ areas set up for non-indigenous resource extraction, reports a new study published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The research, which involved an international team, compared rates of forest loss between different categories of managed lands using satellite imagery and statistical analysis.   Original post on mongabay.com    Comments on reddit.com

The Life of a Salvaged Tree, From Forest to Tree – News Watch

Editor’s note: There was a lot of discussion at Rio+20 about reducing deforestation, both to preserve critical habitat and decrease carbon emissions. Some big commitments were made to that end, including by national and state governments (Brazil) and corporations (leading food companies vowed to end their contribution to deforestation by 2020). By Drew Hendricks Forest areas…   Original post on nationalgeographic.com    Comments on digg.com

Africa’s savannas may become forests by 2100, study suggests

Large parts of Africa’s savannas may well be forests by 2100. The study suggests that fertilization by atmospheric carbon dioxide is forcing increases in tree cover throughout Africa. A switch from savanna to forest occurs once a critical threshold of carbon dioxide concentration is exceeded, yet each site has its own critical threshold. The implication is that each savanna will switch at different points in time, thereby reducing the risk that a synchronous shock to the earth system will emanate from savannas.   Original post on sciencedaily.com    Comments on digg.com
